Theatre is dead
and we killed it

Every Brilliant Thing
Writing a list of every brilliant thing in the world is not an easy thing to do. But when your dad takes you out of class to see your mum in the hospital, maybe a list of all the things worth living for is the only thing a seven-year-old can do to save a life.
1. Ice cream
2. Water fights
3. Staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV
This is the start of our list.
Ever Brilliant Thing, by Duncan MacMillian, is a life-affirming story of a boy who grows up with a suicidal mother. Simultaneously hilarious and gut-wrenching, Every Brilliant Thing weaves an intricate pattern of the stories we tell ourselves and each other that makes life worth living. This intimate theatrical experience immerses audiences in the realities of depression and the beauty of life.

The Founder would like a word
My name is Jan Brink. I’m South African by birth, but I call Hong Kong home. I have, in some form, worked in the theatre industry for more than a decade, having leveraged my capabilities as a trained theatre practitioner to work side by side with corporate clients, events companies, schools, artists and production houses to create meaningful work. My time in Hong Kong has also afforded me the opportunity to establish healthy and profitable working relationships with some of the city’s most influential schools and corporate entities, while at the same time, running and growing various entertainment and education businesses amid the global pandemic.
I started Kill Your Darlings as a means to subvert expectations, as much in the way we create theatre as in the way we live our lives. Every day, we are confronted with the realities created by the societies we live in. We choose to live those realities. Kill Your Darlings is my way of joining billions of voices screaming into the void, demanding that we, at the very least, think about the how’s and the why’s of life.
I decided to build a place where I could create art that was truly mine. A place where I could tinker, and tease and develop and experiment and laugh maniacally as my creations bore fruit. I wanted a place where I, and others like me, could be free from convention and tradition. A place where the shows and workshops and classes aren’t watered down. Where we can come together in a way that is significant.
Kill Your Darlings Theatre is a movement. An idea. An ideal. I created it in the hopes of showing artists, seasoned actors and students of the craft that there is a better way. That theatre is life as much as life is theatre and that we shouldn’t have to settle.
